There is more politics in a political detective story than a detective story.

Two hypotheses are put forward. Perhaps the arm of the avenger-pharmacist is guiding... the police themselves. It is she, the police, who is interested in ensuring that old-fashioned liberal lawyers do not interfere with her unhindered crackdown on the objectionable, dissidents, especially communists, and therefore the police secretly help the elusive and invisible Kress and hinder the slow but assertive Rogues. Another hypothesis is that Kress or someone else is committing the murders on behalf of a political group called Zeta. All that is known about Zeta is that it is a leftist, extremist organization and that the magazine it publishes is called Permanent Revolution. Rogas' death does not confirm either of these two hypotheses, but it does not negate either: perhaps Rogas was "removed" by the police, perhaps Zeta dealt with him... There is no clarity.

The essential thing is this. Francesco Rosi's film is based on the acclaimed novel-parody of the writer Leonardo Shasha "Context". (For an analysis of this novel, see Cecilia Keen's book "Italian Chiaroscuro," Moscow: The Soviet Writer, 1975, pp. 152-162.) As in Shasha's novel, Rosie's film takes place in an unnamed country, although it is quite obvious that it is about Italy and even more specifically about Sicily. However, if Shasha, in a novel written seven years ago, did not see a fundamental difference between communists and the "leftists" from Zeta, then Francesco Rosi defines this difference quite clearly. For Rosie, there seems to be no doubt that black terror is hiding under the red banner of the Trotskyites and Maoists of the Zeta, that the Zeta (like the notorious BR) is essentially a fascist organization.

Stating this fact dryly and lapidally and linking with the "Zeta" the string of murders committed in the "Illustrious Corpses", Rosi, of course, is unable to propose a positive program for the rehabilitation of the entire political life of the country or ridding Italy of the plague of terrorism. But the conclusions he draws are still extremely significant.

For Rosie raises her voice against attempts to pass off black as red, against those who tend to label the terrorist acts of the Ross Brigade as imaginary leftism and "revolutionism." The logic of political extremism, inspired by Trotskyist and Maoist ideas, inevitably and almost automatically connects those who are "to the left of the left" with those who are "to the right of the right."

No matter how much the leaders of the "BR" insist on their intentions to destroy the bourgeois state, it is quite obvious that they want only one thing: to destroy all the democratic institutions of the republic, seize power and give Italy back to the black shirts. That is why the Communists of Italy consider — and rightly so — the "BR" to be their worst enemies.

Francesco Rosi's political detective story has a lot more politics than detective stories. Thinking about the fate of Italy is moving forward with cautious, not very confident steps. But the steps are on the right track, and the sensational events that took place in the spring of 1978, after the "Illustrious Corpses" appeared on the screen, with depressing force confirmed the gloomy forecast of Francesco Rosi.
