The Embassy of Tanzania in Cairo hosted an official celebration in the Egyptian capital to mark the 62nd anniversary of the country’s independence. The event was held under the patronage of Ambassador Richard Mwakanzo, Tanzania’s Ambassador to Egypt.

The celebration brought together a distinguished group of diplomatic and government representatives, led by Ambassador Mohamadu Labarang, Dean of African Ambassadors and Ambassador of Cameroon. The event was also attended by several African envoys, including the ambassadors of Rwanda, South Sudan, Burundi, Malawi, Namibia, Zambia, and Kenya.

Representing the Egyptian government were Ambassador Mohamed Abu Bakr, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for African Affairs, and Ambassador Karim Sherif, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for African Affairs. The event also welcomed Tanzania’s Deputy Minister of Energy, alongside representatives of major companies involved in joint Egyptian-Tanzanian projects.

Among the key attendees were Eng. Wael Hamdy, Vice President and CEO of the Engineering and Construction Sector, Elsewedy Electric, and Dr. Eng. Ahmed El Adlani, Board Member of Arab Contractors, in addition to a distinguished group of media professionals and public figures.

A key highlight of the celebration was the growing momentum of economic cooperation between Egypt and Tanzania, particularly in the fields of energy and infrastructure. Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project was showcased as one of the most significant strategic ventures, executed by the joint venture of Arab Contractors and Elsewedy Electric, and expected to be inaugurated soon.

With an estimated generation capacity of approximately 2,115 megawatts, the project represents a major milestone in Tanzania’s development journey. It is set to significantly enhance the quality of life for citizens by supporting essential services and enabling sustainable economic growth. The project also reinforces Tanzania’s position as an attractive destination for regional and international investment, reflecting the depth of the strategic partnership between Cairo and Dar es Salaam.

Speakers at the event emphasized on the strength of the long-standing relations between Egypt and Tanzania and expressed their aspirations to further expand bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors in the coming period.

The United Republic of Tanzania celebrates its national unity on April 26 each year, known as “Union Day,” commemorating the historic union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 1964.

The Union Agreement (Act of Union) was signed on April 26, 1964, between Tanganyika’s then President Julius Nyerere and Zanzibar’s President Abeid Amani Karume.

This national occasion symbolizes unity and sovereignty and is marked annually with official celebrations, including presidential addresses, military parades, and cultural performances, typically held in Dar es Salaam or the capital, Dodoma.

As Tanzania celebrates its 62nd anniversary, Elsewedy Industrial City (EIC) stands as a powerful symbol of industrial progress and regional opportunity. Spanning 2.6 million square meters, EIC is designed as a fully integrated industrial hub that brings together a diverse range of industries within a modern, efficiently managed environment.

Positioned as one of Africa’s first comprehensive industrial ecosystems, the city offers world-class infrastructure, advanced planning, and a high-quality setting for both business and community living. It serves as a strategic gateway for investment and sustainable development, reinforcing Tanzania’s role as a leading growth destination across East Africa and the continent.

Commenting on the significance of these developments, Eng. Wael Hamdy stated “Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project and Elsewedy Industrial City in Tanzania are clear reflections of the strong alignment between Egypt’s vision for regional partnership and Tanzania’s ambitious development agenda. These projects go beyond infrastructure, they contribute to long-term economic resilience, industrialization, and job creation. We are proud to play a role in supporting the shared development goals of both nations and strengthening South-South cooperation across Africa.”
